Ross Pearson, Forest School Leader at Abbeyfields Primary School

“At Abbeyfields we offer Forest School learning on-site so children from early years up to key stage two get to take part in Forest School classes every week. The children love learning about nature; it’s an incredibly popular learning theme at our school.

“Because our Forest School is on-site we have to ensure every Forest School lesson is related to the curriculum; so we cover science, maths, reading, writing, speaking and listening and demonstrate learning achievements to OFSTED.

“Eden Learning Spaces’ Grab-and-Go Cushions from their Learn about Nature collection have been particularly useful in our Forest School. The class can get their wellies and waterproofs on and literally grab a cushion and go outside. The cushions are thick enough to provide a comfortable kneeling pad when the children are getting up close to nature on the forest floor or when out in fields on minibeast hunts. This keeps them comfortable and focussed on learning.

“Our year two classroom also has a nature themed reading corner indoors where they have utilised Eden’s Tree Stump Stools. The children love to read there as it’s such an inviting environment so it’s often used as a reward area.

“We are also looking to add some soft furnishings to our tipi in the school field, which will become an especially relaxing and calming environment for our SEN learners in Forest School.”
